Lucy Powell Simmons was a quiet spoken but exceptionally talented and aggressive player with a warm, engaging smile. Lucy played forward and could be depended on to make the shots when the heat was on the team. Coached by ms. Lauretta "Big T" Taylor, she lettered all four years in basketball. Lucy loved singing in the choir, under Mrs. Mary Terry [Eldridge], almost as much as she enjoyed playing basketball. Following graduation, Lucy continued her education at North Carolina A&T State University and East Carolina University where she received her Certification for Exceptional Children. She later received the Masters Degree from Pembroke State. While living in Germany, she taught in the school system for 6 1/2 years. Back in North Carolina, Mrs. Powell taught in the Whiteville Public Schools, evergreen Public Schools and retired from Chadbourn Pubic Schools in 1992. She is very active in her church and community. She is a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church where she serves as President of the Missionary Circle, the Woman's Auxiliary to the New Era Association of the Women's Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Convention of North Carolina. She is active in the Order of Eastern Star to name a few of her commitments. Her husband, Philip Simmons, Sr. passed in 1993. She is the mother of four children.
