Fayetteville State joined the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) in 1940 and immediately made a name for itself with seven EIAC Championships, prior to Broncos joining the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in 1954.

Basketball reached its greatest heights in the new conference during the early seventies under Head Coach Thomas L. Reeves. He promised a CIAA Championship after finishing as the CIAA Runner-Up in the 1972 Tournament and delivered the following season in 1973.

Fayetteville State University won its first CIAA Basketball Tournament Championship by topping Elizabeth City State, Winston-Salem State, and defeating the defending champion Norfolk State, 94-89, in overtime. The Broncos finished with a 21-11 overall record and a third-place finish in the NCAA South Atlantic Regionals.
