From walk-on to record-setter, Richard Medlin’s journey at Fayetteville State University is one of perseverance, excellence, and impact. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina and Garner High School graduate, Medlin joined the Broncos in 2007 and quickly rose to become one of the most dynamic players in program history.
After redshirting his first season, Medlin led FSU in rushing for three consecutive years (2008–2010) and became the team’s top return specialist. In 2008, he was named CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year, returning three kickoffs for touchdowns in just two games and averaging an astonishing 41.7 yards per return.
In 2009, Medlin helped guide Fayetteville State to a CIAA Championship, rushing for 667 yards and 10 touchdowns. His senior season in 2010 saw him rack up 772 rushing yards, 5.4 yards per carry, and 26 receptions, earning him the title of FSU Male Athlete of the Year. He finished his collegiate career with 2,721 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns, placing him among the all-time greats in Bronco football.
Medlin’s success continued at the professional level. Though undrafted in 2011, he signed with the New England Patriots, scoring two touchdowns in his first preseason game. He later joined the Miami Dolphins, making his NFL debut in a win over the New York Jets, and spent time with the Atlanta Falcons.
Richard Medlin’s induction into the Fayetteville State Athletics Hall of Fame honors a career defined by grit, achievement, and inspiration. His legacy lives on as a symbol of what’s possible through hard work and belief.
