The 1976 Fayetteville State golf team, under the expert guidance of Coach Moses Walker, achieved an extraordinary feat by capturing the CIAA Golf Tourney Crown at Winston Lakes Golf Course in Winston-Salem, N.C., on May 1. This remarkable team, consisting of Vincent Reid, Andre Springs, Randy Combs, Dennis Williams, Clyde Harris, and John Prince, finished the regular season undefeated with a perfect 9-0 record in match play.
Freshman Andre Springs from Charlotte, North Carolina, emerged as the new CIAA Golf Champion for 1976, shooting an impressive two-day total of 78-75-153. Last year's champion, Vincent Reid, followed closely with a two-day total of 158, while Randy Combs posted a 159. The team's dominant performance led them to a commanding 57-stroke victory over their closest competitors, including J.C. Smith, St. Augustine, Winston-Salem State, Livingstone, and Shaw University.
Coach Moses Walker, a Raleigh native and former caddy, has built a formidable golf program at Fayetteville State University. His leadership and vision have created a golf dynasty, with the team winning the CIAA Golf Title for the second consecutive year. Walker's dedication to excellence is evident in the team's undefeated season and their overwhelming success in the CIAA Golf Tourney.
Vincent Reid, the team captain and last year's CIAA Golf Champion, played a crucial role in the team's success. His consistent performance and leadership earned him "Most Valuable Player" honors at the school's athletic banquet. Freshman Andre Springs, who won the "Most Outstanding Freshman Award," has shown tremendous potential and is poised to lead the team in the coming years. Springs' decision to join Fayetteville State, influenced by his sister Jackie, has proven to be a significant boost for the Broncos.
