
Kenny Phillips led the Broncos’ football program for 13 seasons from 2000 to 2012. During this time span, Fayetteville State University won three CIAA Championships and compiled a record of 75-63; the most wins in the history of Bronco football.
Under Phillips leadership, the Broncos claimed CIAA titles in 2002 (his third season at the helm), 2003, and 2009. Fayetteville State made four Championship game appearances (2002, 2003, 2004, and 2009) and appeared in three NCAA Division II Regional Playoffs (2002, 2004, and 2009).
During his overall coaching career, Phillips won five conference titles and appeared in three bowl games. He collected several coaching honors and awards during his time as FSU’s head coach. In 2002 and 2009, he was named the CIAA Coach of the Year nd was honored as the Most Outstanding Coach of the 2002 CIAA Championship game.
The Washington D.C. Pigskin Club named Kenny Phillips their Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2004. He was also named the 100% Wrong Club’s CIAA Coach of the Year.
The Broncos compiled a 16-6 record and a .727 winning percentage during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The only two-year winning percentage better was a .785 percentage (11-3-1) from 1975 to 1976. Under the tutelage of Phillips, Fayetteville State had over 50 student-athletes named to the All-CIAA team, three CIAA Rookies of the Year, two CIAA Defensive Players of the Year, and two CIAA Special Teams Players of the Year.
Kenny Phillips passed away on October 23, 2015 at the age of 56. He is survived by his wife Beverly and two daughters, Kendra and Kennedy.
