A trailblazer in intercollegiate athletics and a tireless advocate for student-athlete development, Dr. Peggy L. Green has built a distinguished career defined by leadership, service, and a lasting impact on women’s athletics at Fayetteville State University, within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), and across the nation.
Dr. Green began her journey in the CIAA in 1983 at Livingstone College, where she served as a physical education instructor, women’s basketball coach, and cheerleader advisor. In 1985, she joined Fayetteville State University, where she quickly became a cornerstone of the athletics department. During her tenure, she coached women’s volleyball for four seasons and women’s basketball for seven years, while also contributing in the classroom as an instructor dedicated to shaping future educators.
In 1989, Dr. Green was appointed Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) at Fayetteville State, a role she held with distinction until 2011. As SWA, she championed equity and opportunity for women in sports while advocating for the success and well-being of all student-athletes. Her leadership helped elevate Fayetteville State’s athletics program and strengthen its commitment to academic and athletic excellence.
On the national stage, Dr. Green’s influence extended through significant service within the NCAA. She spent nine years on the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee, including two years as chair, where she played a key role in shaping championship policies and promoting growth within the sport. Her extensive committee work also includes service on the NCAA Division II Management Council, the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee, and the NCAA Division II Project Team on Diversity—demonstrating her steadfast commitment to inclusion and advancement in intercollegiate athletics.
A respected leader among her peers, Dr. Green holds membership in several professional organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA). She made history as the first woman from Fayetteville State University to hold a national athletic office, paving the way for future generations of leaders in collegiate athletics.
In recognition of her lifelong dedication to advancing women in sports, Dr. Green received the prestigious NACWAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. This national honor celebrates individuals whose careers have significantly improved opportunities for women and girls in athletics. That same year, she was inducted into the CIAA’s prestigious John B. McLendon, Jr. Hall of Fame, further solidifying her legacy as one of the conference’s most influential figures.
Beyond athletics administration, Dr. Green continues to impact students as an associate professor, teaching middle grades health and physical education and preparing the next generation of educators and coaches.
Through decades of service marked by leadership, mentorship, and advocacy, Dr. Peggy L. Green has left an enduring legacy at Fayetteville State University and throughout collegiate athletics. Her contributions have opened doors for countless student-athletes and administrators, ensuring that opportunities in sport continue to grow for generations to come.
