WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Fayetteville State closed out Saturday's CIAA Round-Up action in commanding fashion, sweeping Lincoln (Pa.) 3-0 at Whitaker Gymnasium.
The Broncos earned the victory by scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-16, improving to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in CIAA play. Lincoln fell to 1-13 overall and 0-6 in conference competition.
The Broncos showcased their depth throughout the match as multiple players contributed offensively.
Kemyah Harris led Fayetteville State with six kills and added a service ace, while
Destiny Washington posted six kills on a .455 hitting percentage.
Erin Johnson delivered an outstanding performance, recording five kills on seven attempts for a .714 attacking percentage, and
Mya Hejl added four kills while hitting .500.
Setter
Giovanna Teixeira directed the offense with 19 assists while contributing four service aces, five digs and a kill.
Melissa Gonzalez added seven assists and matched Teixeira with four service aces, helping spark several decisive runs for the Broncos.
Fayetteville State established control early in the opening set. After building a 14-5 advantage behind the serving of
Tamari Hill and the attacking of Harris and Hejl, the Broncos closed the set on a 11-6 run to secure a 25-11 victory.
The second set was even more dominant. Lincoln jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Fayetteville State responded with a 25-4 surge. A lengthy run behind Gonzalez's serving helped the Broncos turn a one-point lead into a commanding advantage, and Fayetteville State closed the frame with the final six points for a 25-8 win.
Lincoln provided its toughest challenge in the third set, cutting the deficit to 18-16. The Broncos answered immediately, scoring seven of the final eight points. Teixeira delivered a pair of service aces during the stretch, while Fayetteville State's defense and blocking unit shut down any comeback attempt before securing the 25-16 victory and the match sweep.
Lincoln was led by
Niana Coar with four kills, while
Charly Manley recorded eight digs and eight assists.
Donavyn Morris contributed a team-high three service aces for the Lions.
