Fayetteville State University Athletics

Sophomore setter Melissa "Mel" Gonzalez brings a strong volleyball pedigree and championship experience to the Fayetteville State volleyball program. A native of Miami, Florida, Gonzalez transferred from Bethune-Cookman and is pursuing a degree in Nursing while continuing her athletic career with the Broncos.

Prior to college, Gonzalez established herself as one of South Florida's top volleyball players at Riviera Preparatory School. Her impressive high school career included selection to the 2022 and 2023 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships All-Tournament Team and participation in the 2019 USA Volleyball High-Performance Championships as a member of Team Florida. She also earned First Team All-Dade honors as both a sophomore and junior and was recognized as the 5A-7A Player of the Year.

Gonzalez chose Fayetteville State because of the family atmosphere she felt throughout the program and university community. She was drawn to the close-knit environment and support system that helps student-athletes succeed both academically and athletically.

In the classroom, Gonzalez is working toward her goal of attending Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) school after graduation. She also hopes to remain involved in the game through coaching and mentoring future generations of volleyball players.

One of the most influential figures in her athletic journey has been longtime club coach Emilio Rodriguez, whose guidance and leadership helped shape her development as a player and competitor.

Away from volleyball, Gonzalez is committed to serving others. She has volunteered at Fayetteville State's campus daycare, demonstrating the same care and dedication off the court that she brings to competition.

As a setter, Gonzalez prides herself on leadership, communication, and creating opportunities for her teammates to succeed. With a championship background and a team-first mentality, she adds valuable experience and poise to the Broncos lineup.
