Biography

Sophomore libero and defensive specialist Nicolette "Nic" Connell brings energy, determination, and a championship mindset to the Fayetteville State volleyball program. A native of Camden, South Carolina, Connell transferred from UNC Charlotte and provides the Broncos with a skilled defensive presence and a relentless work ethic.

Before beginning her collegiate career, Connell enjoyed a standout volleyball career at Camden High School. She was named Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2023-24 and 2024-25) while also earning All-Region honors twice. Among her many accomplishments, she was selected to the Carolina Challenge All-Tournament Team during the 2023-24 season and earned a spot on the prestigious North/South All-Star Team in 2024-25, where she competed in the state's all-star match. In addition to volleyball, Connell competed in track and field during high school.

Connell chose Fayetteville State because of the culture and championship mentality that surrounds the volleyball program.

"I chose FSU because of their champion mindset and drive to be the best. I knew I would not only be able to grow as an athlete, but as a person too."

Since arriving on campus, she has embraced the family atmosphere that exists throughout Bronco athletics.

"The bonds created within my team, but also with other sports teams, make FSU special to me."

One of the greatest challenges Connell has overcome came during her junior year of high school when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Learning to manage the condition while continuing to compete at a high level required both physical and mental adjustments. Through perseverance, discipline, and a positive attitude, she has continued to excel as a student-athlete while serving as an example of resilience for others facing adversity.

Before every match, Connell follows a unique pregame tradition by making sure she high-fives every teammate, coach, and trainer. She also prepares mentally through prayer, listening to her favorite music, and practicing box breathing techniques to stay calm and focused. Visualization is a key part of her preparation, as she often pictures successful performances and team victories before stepping onto the court.

Connell credits Nebraska volleyball standout Harper Murray as her biggest athletic influence, drawing inspiration from her confidence, competitiveness, and success at the highest levels of collegiate volleyball.

One of her favorite volleyball memories came during her junior year of high school when she competed in the state championship match.

"The big crowd, the atmosphere, the nerves, being with my teammates, and the excitement made it so memorable."

She also fondly recalls a memorable team experience at UNC Charlotte, when she and her teammates raced through an airport trying to catch a connecting flight after an away match.

Away from volleyball, Connell enjoys journaling, taking walks, and playing pickleball. Academically, she is pursuing a degree in Birth-Kindergarten Education (Non-Teaching) and hopes to build a career working with newborns. Her future goals include becoming a Newborn Care Specialist and a newborn photographer, combining her passion for children with her creative interests.

At Fayetteville State, Connell continues to grow in confidence as both a student and athlete while contributing to a culture built on excellence, accountability, and teamwork.
