Sophomore guard Anthony "AJ" Mendez brings hometown pride, versatility, and a strong connection to Fayetteville State University to the Broncos men's basketball program. A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, the 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard continues to develop his game while representing the community he has called home throughout his life. Mendez is pursuing a degree in Business Administration and is expected to graduate in 2028.
Before arriving at Fayetteville State, Mendez attended Northwood Temple Academy, where he built the foundation for his collegiate basketball career. Growing up in Fayetteville gave him a unique appreciation for the university and its impact on the local community. That connection made the opportunity to wear the Bronco uniform especially meaningful.
Mendez credits his family as his biggest athletic influence. Their support, encouragement, and guidance have played an important role in helping him reach the collegiate level and continue pursuing his goals both on and off the court.
Away from basketball, Mendez enjoys playing video games and relaxing while watching television. Looking ahead, he plans to build a career in real estate, using the discipline and work ethic developed through athletics to help him succeed in the business world.
Mendez chose Fayetteville State because of his deep roots on campus and his connection to the university community. With his mother, Amy Coleman, a Fayetteville State alumna, the institution has long been a part of his life. What makes Fayetteville State special to him is the family atmosphere that extends throughout the campus and athletic department, creating an environment where everyone supports and cares for one another.
As he continues his journey with the Broncos, Mendez looks forward to contributing to the program's success while proudly representing his hometown and university.
