Junior guard Maxwell "Max" Coles brings championship experience, leadership, and a competitive edge to the Fayetteville State men's basketball program. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, the 6-foot, 185-pound point guard joins the Broncos with a strong basketball background and a proven history of winning. Coles is pursuing a degree in Banking and Finance and is expected to graduate in 2028.
Before arriving at Fayetteville State, Coles attended North Mecklenburg High School, where he helped lead his team to both conference regular-season and conference tournament championships. He also excelled academically as a member of the National Honor Society. His success continued at the collegiate level, where he was part of a Division I junior college national championship team while earning his associate degree.
Coles credits his family, his faith in God, and NBA legend Kobe Bryant as his biggest athletic influences. Bryant's famed "Mamba Mentality" has inspired Coles' relentless approach to improvement, perseverance, and competition. One of his favorite athletic memories is simply winning, a testament to his team-first mindset and commitment to success.
Away from basketball, Coles enjoys spending time with friends, traveling, and seeking out new adventures. Those experiences have helped shape his outgoing personality and love for exploring different places and opportunities. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue his basketball career professionally while also pursuing opportunities in real estate.
Coles chose Fayetteville State because of the coaching staff, the opportunity to continue his basketball journey, and the overall student experience the university offers. What makes Fayetteville State special to him is the chance to experience HBCU culture while competing in the prestigious CIAA. Through his determination and resilience, Coles has overcome challenges along his journey, embracing the grind of "getting it out the mud" as he continues working toward his goals.
