UNC Pembroke Tops Fayetteville State 84-75 Despite Broncos’ Second-Half Surge

Pembroke, N.C. – Fayetteville State University's men's basketball team mounted a spirited second-half comeback but fell short in an 84-75 loss to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday night at the English E. Jones Center.

The Broncos struggled early, shooting just 24.1% from the field in the first half, and trailed 43-24 at the break. UNC Pembroke capitalized on its hot start, led by guard Javonte Waverly, who scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including three three-pointers. Forward Mahmoud Bangura added 18 points and 11 made free throws, helping the Braves dominate inside and maintain control throughout the contest.

Fayetteville State responded after halftime, erupting for 51 points on 57.1% shooting. Larry Howell paced the Broncos with 20 points and eight free throws, while Ezekiel Cannedy added 18 points and three triples. Travon Cooper chipped in 12 points, and Omar Byrd contributed nine off the bench. Despite cutting the deficit to single digits late, the Broncos couldn't overcome UNCP's efficiency and rebounding advantage.

The Broncos briefly led 16-15 midway through the first half but never regained the advantage. UNCP's largest lead stretched to 22 points before FSU's late rally. A dunk by Tahj Johnson in the final minutes sealed the Braves' victory.
