AHOSKIE, N.C. – The Fayetteville State golf team posted a strong third-place finish at the Hampton Farms Intercollegiate, hosted by Chowan, as the Broncos were paced by standout performances from Landon Cabingas and Donald Barnett at Hampton Farms Golf Club.
Fayetteville State finished the three-round tournament with a team score of 895 after rounds of 303, 296 and 296. The Broncos finished just one stroke behind second-place Mount Olive (894 - 309, 290, 295) and eight strokes back of tournament champion Barton (887 - 300, 299, 288).
Cabingas and Barnett each finished in a four-way tie for third place individually, both carding a total score of 221. Cabingas opened the tournament with a 73 in the first round, recording birdies on holes 3, 8, 16 and 18 to get Fayetteville State off to a solid start. He followed with a 75 in round two, highlighted by a birdie on the 18th hole, before closing the event with a strong final round. Cabingas fired a 73 in round three, notching birdies on holes 2, 11 and 16 as he climbed into the top three on the leaderboard.
Barnett matched his teammate throughout the tournament with consistent play across all three rounds. He opened with a 74 in round one, recording birdies on holes 3 and 4 and punctuating the round with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. In round two, Barnett posted a 76, carding birdies on holes 3, 8 and 18, before delivering one of the Broncos' best rounds of the tournament on the final day. Barnett closed with a 71 in round three, highlighted by birdies on holes 2 and 13 and another eagle on hole 18 to finish tied for third overall.
The Broncos' third-place result continues a strong stretch of play for Fayetteville State as the team competes against regional competition just before heading to Mebane, NC to compete in the CIAA Golf Championship, April 13-14.
