Game Preview: Fayetteville State vs. Elizabeth City State
Setting the Stage
The 27th edition of the
Down East Viking Football Classic marks the
CIAA conference opener for both teams. Fayetteville State enters the game at
0–3, having dropped tough non-conference contests to Benedict, UNC Pembroke, and North Carolina Central. Elizabeth City State, also winless at
0–3, is coming off a narrow 21–17 loss to Johnson C. Smith, where they showed flashes of offensive explosiveness and defensive grit.
Fayetteville State Broncos
- Head Coach: Richard Hayes Jr.
- 2024 Record: 4–5
- Last Meeting: FSU defeated ECSU 31–7, holding the Vikings to just 154 total yards.
FSU will look to rebound from a slow start and lean on its defense, which dominated ECSU last season. The Broncos have struggled offensively in 2025 but have the talent to turn things around.
Elizabeth City State Vikings
- Head Coach: Adrian Jones (1st season; formerly at Shaw University)
- 2024 Record: 3–7
- Recent Performance: Nearly upset No. 23 Johnson C. Smith, led by a 91-yard TD from WR Ka'Trez Bracey and a strong defensive showing.
Jones brings a fresh energy and familiarity with FSU's system from his time at Shaw. ECSU's offense has shown big-play potential, but consistency and protection will be key.
What to Watch
- Can FSU's defense replicate last year's dominance?
- Will ECSU's new-look offense under Adrian Jones find rhythm early?
- Which team will control the line of scrimmage and time of possession?
With both teams hungry for their first win and conference momentum, expect a physical, emotional battle in Rocky Mount.

CIAA Conference Opener
The 27th edition of the
Down East Viking Football Classic promises to be a compelling matchup as
Fayetteville State University (FSU) and
Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) open
CIAA conference play in Rocky Mount. The Broncos enter the game riding momentum from last year's
31-7 victory, where they held ECSU to just
154 total yards and dominated both sides of the ball.
This year, however, the Vikings bring a new energy under
Head Coach Adrian Jones, who is no stranger to Fayetteville State. Jones spent nine seasons leading
Shaw University, a fellow CIAA Southern Division rival, and compiled a 35–45 record with multiple winning seasons and All-CIAA honorees. His familiarity with FSU's schemes and personnel could be a key factor in ECSU's game plan.
Jones inherits a program looking to rebound from a
3-7 campaign in 2024, and the Classic offers a high-profile opportunity to make a statement. ECSU has already faced tough competition early in the season, including road games against Chowan and Hampton, and will be eager to showcase growth in Jones' first year at the helm.
Meanwhile, Fayetteville State, led by Head Coach
Richard Hayes, Jr., will look to build on its defensive prowess and efficient offensive execution. Last year's Classic saw standout performances from quarterback
Joe Owens, Jr., running back
Julian Milligan, and wide receiver
David Baros, all of whom contributed to the Broncos' commanding win.
With the CIAA standings on the line and a storied rivalry renewed, expect a spirited battle in front of a lively crowd at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex. The Broncos aim to extend their success in the Classic, where they hold a
7-3 advantage, while the Vikings seek to usher in a new era with a signature win.
Here are the
players to watch for
Fayetteville State heading into the 2025
Down East Viking Football Classic:

- Demari Daniels (QB) – Has thrown for 221 yards on 56 attempts with a 41% completion rate. While still developing consistency, Daniels has shown flashes of mobility and arm strength.
- Joe Owens Jr. (QB) – A more efficient passer with a 63.6% completion rate, 108 yards, and one touchdown in limited action. Owens could be a difference-maker if given the start.
- Unique Kelly (WR) – Top receiver with 137 yards on 12 catches, averaging 11.4 yards per reception. His route-running and hands make him a reliable target.
- Kahlil Ashley-Diarrah (WR) – Adds depth to the receiving corps with 84 yards and one touchdown on 8 receptions.
Defensive Leaders
- Matthew Leach (LB) – Team leader in tackles with 24 total (12 solo), plus a sack and three tackles for loss. He anchors the defense with physicality and awareness.

These players will be pivotal as the Broncos look to secure a win in Rocky Mount and start CIAA play on a high note.
Keys to Victory for Fayetteville State
1. Establish the Run Early
Running back
Bryce Council has been a consistent producer, averaging over 6 yards per carry. Establishing the ground game will help control the tempo and wear down ECSU's defense, especially if the Vikings struggle with tackling in space.
2. Quarterback Efficiency
Whether it's
Demari Daniels or
Joe Owens Jr. under center, limiting turnovers and maximizing red zone opportunities will be crucial. Owens' higher completion rate and poise in the pocket could give the Broncos an edge if he starts.
3. Defensive Pressure
Linebacker
Matthew Leach and lineman
Jamari Slade have been disruptive forces. Applying pressure on ECSU's quarterback—especially with a new offensive system under Head Coach Adrian Jones—could lead to sacks and forced errors.
4. Limit Big Plays
ECSU may try to stretch the field or use misdirection to exploit gaps. Defensive backs like
Amari Best must stay disciplined and prevent explosive plays that could swing momentum.
5. Special Teams Execution
Kicker
John Hernandez-Vargas and returner
William Johnson can flip field position and add hidden yardage. Clean execution in the kicking game could be the difference in a tight contest.
6. Adapt to Adrian Jones' Scheme
Jones, formerly of Shaw University, is known for aggressive play-calling and creative formations. FSU's coaching staff must prepare for unpredictability and adjust quickly to any new wrinkles ECSU unveils.
