FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- The Fayetteville State Broncos needed nine innings to finish the job, but secured a thrilling 5-4 extra-innings win, walking it off on freshman Angelica Locklear's double to claim victory over the Bluefield University Rams on Wednesday. This win was particularly special as it was Senior Day, adding an extra layer of celebration to the triumph.
Freshman Kevana Deberry (5-4) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Fayetteville State (11-16). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing four walks, and striking out two.
At the plate, the Broncos were paced by freshman Treja Patterson, who went 2-for-4 on the day with two doubles and two RBI. Freshman Xztashya Porter also had a noteworthy day at the dish, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Locklear contributed significantly, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate, including the game-winning double.
The Broncos got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning thanks to Patterson's RBI double with two outs. Although they lost the lead built in the first, they got back on the board in the second, trailing 3-1. Fayetteville State scored twice on Porter's two-run homer, which brought the score level at 3-3.
Bluefield University then broke the tie and took a 4-3 lead before Fayetteville State scored two runs in the bottom half of the ninth to grab the win, walking it off on Locklear's one-out RBI double.
