ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Despite numerous chances, Fayetteville State couldn't capitalize, leaving 10 Broncos stranded on base in a 9-2 defeat against the Claflin Panthers on Friday. Freshman Tamarah Lowery (4-7) started for Fayetteville State (11-17, 7-6) but ultimately took the loss.
The Broncos found themselves trailing 2-0 by the fourth inning when they finally managed to score. Fayetteville State pushed across two runs to tie the game, but Claflin responded with seven runs over the next three innings, securing a decisive 9-2 victory.
Freshman Cheyenne Payne showcased her speed with two stolen bases, while Fayetteville State pitchers faced 33 Claflin hitters, allowing zero ground balls and 13 fly balls, striking out three. The Broncos drew eight walks from Claflin pitching, with Payne leading at the plate, contributing an RBI despite not recording a hit.
Claflin's offense was spearheaded by sophomore Morgan Tate, who went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. On the mound, sophomore Katelynn Grissom delivered a strong performance, pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs.
