COLUMBIA, S.C. (Game 1) — Benedict College defeated Fayetteville State University 4-0 in a softball game at Tiger Field on Monday.
Savanna Marshall (7-4) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out five. Fayetteville State's Tamarah Lowery (0-2) took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits over four innings.
Benedict broke the scoreless tie in the third inning when Megan Blanks tripled to right field, driving in T. Chambliss. Blanks later scored on a passed ball. The Tigers added another run in the fourth on a single by C. Crooks, and T. Lake tripled in the fifth to bring the score to 4-0.
Fayetteville State managed five hits but couldn't capitalize, leaving six runners on base. Treja Patterson, Angelica Locklear, Morgan Jackson, Olivia Jackson, and Sydney Jackson each recorded a hit for the Broncos. The defense committed one error.
The game lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, with an attendance of 30 under partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 61 degrees.
