FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville State Broncos (1-9) clinched their first victory of the season with a 7-5 win over Carolina (10-7) on Thursday afternoon at Lamon Street Park.
The Broncos took an early lead in the first inning with a three-run homer by Treja Patterson, bringing in Laniyah Bethea and Angelica Locklear. Carolina responded with two runs in the first inning and another in the second to tie the game at 3-3.
Fayetteville State regained the lead in the fourth inning when Aniya Caldwell to score on a wild pitch. The Broncos extended their lead in the fifth inning with RBIs from Locklear and Patterson, making the score 6-4.
In the sixth inning, Xztashya Porter hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in Sydney Jackson and securing a 7-4 lead for the Broncos. Carolina managed to score one more run in the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome Fayetteville State's lead.
Kevana Deberry (1-3) earned her first win of the season, pitching a complete game and allowing five runs on ten hits with four strikeouts. Madison Hamilton (4-1) took the loss for Carolina, giving up seven runs on six hits over six innings.
The Broncos will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season.
