BOWIE, MD -- Fayetteville State continued its strong run through CIAA competition with a dominant three-set victory over Bluefield State on Saturday evening at A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Broncos (12-4, 8-1 CIAA) rolled past the Lady Blues (10-13, 7-2 CIAA) by scores of 25-11, 25-11, 25-17, never trailing in the second and third sets and controlling the tempo throughout the match.
Chiara Vittoni led the Broncos with 12 kills and a .611 hitting percentage, while Jasmine Culp anchored the defense with a match-high 13 digs. Giovanna Teixeira directed the offense with 25 assists and added two service aces. Destiny Washington also served up two aces and contributed six digs in the win.
Fayetteville State opened the match with a commanding first set, taking the lead at 6-5 and never looking back. The Broncos hit .433 in the frame with 15 kills and just two errors, closing the set on a 14-point margin behind strong net play from Chantiya Johnson and consistent attacking from Vittoni and Symone Morris.
In the second set, the Broncos led from the opening serve and again built a 14-point advantage to close out a 25-11 win. Fayetteville State served up five aces in the frame, including two from Teixeira, and held Bluefield State to a -.094 hitting percentage.
Set three saw a brief challenge from the Lady Blues, who kept the score close early. Fayetteville State took the lead for good at 9-8 and pulled away behind kills from Vittoni, Amihan Johnson, and Ramona Pulu. The Broncos added three more aces and closed out the match with a 25-17 win.
Bluefield State was led by Callesta Styles, Soniya Garner, and Maya Morales, who each recorded five kills. Gabby Hale finished with 17 assists and seven digs, while Kaileigh Solis led the team with nine digs. Morales also added the Lady Blues' lone service ace.
Fayetteville State returns to action Sunday morning, Oct. 19, at 11 a.m. to face Elizabeth City State in the final match of the CIAA Round-Up weekend.
