Fayetteville State Sweeps Elizabeth City State to Cap CIAA Round-Up

BOWIE, MD -- Fayetteville State closed out the CIAA Round-Up with a dominant three-set victory over Elizabeth City State, winning 25-16, 25-10, 25-13 on Sunday morning at A.C. Jordan Arena.

The win improved the Broncos to 13-4 overall and 9-1 in CIAA play, while the Vikings fell to 3-15 overall and 3-7 in conference action.

Fayetteville State never trailed in the first two sets and controlled the third after taking the lead for good at 7-6. The Broncos were led by Symone Morris, who finished with a match-high seven kills and 10 digs, while Giovanna Teixeira paced the offense with 22 assists and a match-high three service aces. Fayetteville State totaled 13 aces and hit .240 as a team.

Set 1 saw the Broncos take the opening point and never look back, building an 11-point lead at 24-13 before closing out the set 25-16. Morris, Ramona Pulu, and Chantiya Johnson contributed key kills, while Jasmine Culp added a kill and a service ace.

In Set 2, Fayetteville State served up eight aces, including two each from Teixeira, Edwards, and Vittoni. The Broncos led from start to finish, opening up a 15-point advantage at 24-9 before sealing the 25-10 win.

Set 3 featured just one lead change before Fayetteville State took control. Teixeira added two more aces, and Pulu and Morris delivered late kills to secure the 25-13 win and complete the sweep.

Pulu finished with seven kills on a .545 hitting percentage, while Vittoni added four kills, seven digs, and three aces. Edwards chipped in with three kills and two aces, and Culp contributed five digs and three points.

Elizabeth City State was led by Jorja Hoffman, who recorded five kills and six points, and Christen Brisbane, who added four kills and 5.5 points. Setter Serenity Lunnermon finished with 11 assists, three aces, and seven digs.

Fayetteville State returns to action on Thursday, October 23 at 6 p.m. when it hosts Elizabeth City State again at Capel Arena in Fayetteville.
