GAME 1 | Fayetteville State 3, Saint Andrews (NC) 1
Fayetteville, NC --The Fayetteville State Broncos broke through after a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning to take down the Saint Andrews (NC) Knights 3-1 Wednesday.
Freshman Kevana Deberry (1-1) got the win for Fayetteville State (3-6 overall). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out six.
Offensively, the Broncos were paced by sophomore Angelica Locklear, who went 1-for-3 on the day with two RBI. Freshman Claira Stone furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with an RBI. Freshman Aniya Caldwell also helped out for Fayetteville State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Broncos first put runs on the board in the third inning. Fayetteville State got an RBI single from Stone, scoring Caldwell from second base.
The score stayed at 1-1 until the sixth inning, when the Broncos put runs on the scoreboard once again. Fayetteville State picked up two runs when a single from Locklear brought home freshman Sydney Jackson and junior Laniyah Bethea, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Broncos. The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the game, as Fayetteville State held on for the win.
