WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Fayetteville State's fast pace, defensive intensity, and balanced scoring powered the Broncos to an impressive 84–74 win over Winston‑Salem State on Saturday inside the CE Gaines Center. In a matchup defined by energy, shot‑making, and high‑level playmaking, the Broncos (15–6, 9–2 CIAA) never trailed on their way to a crucial conference victory over the Rams (7–13, 2–9 CIAA).
The win featured standout performances across the lineup, with four Broncos scoring in double figures and the team's defensive pressure disrupting WSSU throughout the afternoon.
Fayetteville State opened the game sharp, controlling tempo and spacing the floor with efficient ball movement and shot‑making. After building a 40–39 lead late in the first half, the Broncos erupted on a 6–0 run, capped by a strong finish from Terrell Williams that extended the advantage to 46–39.
From there, FSU continued applying pressure and capitalizing on Rams miscues. The Broncos forced 10 first‑half turnovers, flipping them into 15 points, and headed into the locker room with a commanding 51–41 lead.
The Broncos delivered one of their most well‑rounded offensive performances of the season.
Larry Howell led the charge with a game‑high 19 points, while Williams added 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists, controlling the action on both ends.
Off the bench,
Ezekiel Cannedy poured in 17 points, knocking down timely shots to keep FSU in rhythm. Meanwhile,
Romeo Aquino provided interior toughness with 15 points and 8 rebounds, including four offensive boards that helped generate 18 second‑chance points for the Broncos.
Defensively, Fayetteville State continued its season‑long identity of disruption. FSU held the Rams to 16.7% from three (3-for-18) and turned 19 WSSU turnovers into 25 points.
Darius Boben set the tone defensively with two steals, while the team collectively maintained constant pressure.
Winston‑Salem State made occasional pushes — especially through standout forward Abou Camara, who posted 18 points and 14 rebounds — but the Broncos countered every surge with scoring runs of their own.
Leading 66–58 early in the second half, FSU once again found separation by stringing together a 6–0 run, pushing the margin to 72–58 with 11:21 remaining. The Broncos punished the Rams inside, scoring 42 points in the paint and maintaining control even as the Rams tried to chip away in the final minutes.
The game tightened slightly late, but the Broncos' early dominance and consistent execution proved too much for the Rams to overcome.
With Saturday's road win at Winston‑Salem State, the Broncos reinforced their identity as one of the CIAA's most complete and resilient teams. Fayetteville State's blend of defensive pressure and veteran leadership once again proved decisive in a hostile environment. As the Broncos continue to build momentum, their focus now shifts to a pivotal stretch at home—one that could further solidify their position near the top of the conference standings. With confidence rising and the offense clicking, Fayetteville State returns to Capel Arena ready to defend its home court and continue its climb toward postseason play.
