COLUMBIA, S.C. — Fayetteville State opened its 2025 campaign with a gritty performance against Benedict College on Saturday night, but fell short in a defensive slugfest at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
Despite outgaining Benedict (1-0) in total offense (282 to 254 yards), the Broncos (0-1) couldn't find the end zone, ultimately falling to the Tigers in a 10–0 decision.
Graduate quarterback Joe Owens Jr. provided a steady hand under center, completing 11 of 15 passes for 73 yards and adding 28 rushing yards on six carries. Senior Demari Daniels also saw action, throwing for 102 yards on 12 completions and showing flashes of mobility despite being sacked twice.
Running back Bryce Council led the ground attack with 68 yards on nine carries, including a game-long 28-yard burst. Council also contributed in the passing game with two receptions for 29 yards.
Wide receiver Unique Kelly paced the receiving corps with six catches for 39 yards, while Caden Davis and TyDarion Grier combined for five receptions and 41 yards.
Defensively, linebacker Tajon Roach was a force, racking up a game-high 11 tackles, including two for loss. Jamari Slade added five tackles and recorded Fayetteville State's lone sack of the night. Defensive backs Keyshawn Monk and Terrell Ford each broke up a pass, helping limit Benedict's aerial attack to just one touchdown.
For Benedict, quarterback Jackson Jensen led the way with 143 passing yards and a touchdown, connecting with Malaqhi Jones for a 14-yard score. Wide receiver Malik Mullins was a key playmaker, hauling in six catches for 83 yards, including a 31-yard gain that set up the Tigers' only touchdown.
Special teams struggled, as kicker John Hernandez-Vargas missed both field goal attempts from 41 and 46 yards. Punter Albert Fleming IV averaged 28 yards on six punts, with one placed inside the 20.
Fayetteville State will look to bounce back next Saturday as they hit the road to face UNC Pembroke. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at Grace P. Johnson Stadium in Pembroke, N.C.
