FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Winston-Salem's two-run fourth inning proved to be the difference in the ballgame, as the Fayetteville State Broncos lost a nailbiter to the Rams by the score of 4-3 on Friday.
Freshman Amber Savage (1-7) started for Fayetteville State (6-15) and took the loss. Freshman Kevana Deberry was a bright spot for the Broncos, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three innings, giving up one run on one hit, with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Broncos got on the scoreboard first in the second inning with an RBI single from freshman A'Leah Wilson, scoring freshman Angelica Locklear from third base. Although the Broncos lost the lead they built in the second, they got back on the board in the fifth, trailing 3-1. Freshman Cheyenne Payne came across to score the lone run of the inning for Fayetteville State, tightening the Rams' lead to 3-2.
Winston-Salem expanded their lead to 4-2 before the Fayetteville State offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 4-3 in the seventh. The Broncos were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
Fayetteville State's highest scoring inning was the seventh, when it pushed one run across. Payne stole two bases in Friday's game. Fayetteville State pitchers limited Winston-Salem to just 1-for-11 (.091) with runners in scoring position. Fayetteville State pitchers faced 30 Winston-Salem hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out four. The Broncos drew four walks from Winston-Salem pitching. Wilson led the Broncos at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Winston-Salem was led offensively by senior M. Wilson, who went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore J. Thomas led the Rams' pitching staff, throwing seven innings of three-run ball.
