FAYETTEVILLE, NC — Fayetteville State extended its win streak to six matches and continued its dominant stretch with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-15) sweep of Johnson C. Smith on Monday evening at Felton J. Capel Arena. The victory marked the Broncos' fifth consecutive sweep and improved their record to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in CIAA play.
Symone Morris led Fayetteville State with a match-high eight kills and added a service ace. Jasmine Culp anchored the defense with 15 digs, and Chantiya Johnson controlled the net with a match-high seven blocks. Giovanna Teixeira paced the offense with 13 assists and two service aces. Johnson C. Smith was led by Dacia Lowery and Malayshia Bradley, who each recorded multiple kills, while Yasmine Cannon contributed several assists. Rylea Ross added a service ace and a kill in the third set.
In the opening set, Johnson C. Smith jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Fayetteville State responded with a 13-5 run, sparked by kills from Morris, Amihan Johnson, and Chiara Vittoni. The Broncos took the lead for good at 18-17 and closed the set on a 7-1 run, capped by a kill and service ace from Vittoni to secure the 25-18 win.
Fayetteville State never trailed in the second set, opening with five straight points behind Teixeira's serving, which included a service ace and two assists to Milana Cvetkovski. The Broncos recorded five blocks and capitalized on 10 attacking errors by the Golden Bulls. Courtlynn Edwards and Johnson added key kills, and Teixeira delivered her second ace of the match as the Broncos cruised to a 25-10 victory.
In the third set, Fayetteville State again led from start to finish. Morris opened with a service ace, and the Broncos built a 10-point cushion to close out the match 25-15. Johnson, Cvetkovski, and Amihan Johnson each contributed kills, while Vittoni and Culp added service aces. The final point came on an attack error by Johnson C. Smith, sealing the sweep.
Fayetteville State will travel to Bowie, MD this weekend for the second CIAA Volleyball Roundup of the season. The Broncos will face Virginia State at 2 p.m. and Bluefield State at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 18. They will close out the event against Elizabeth City State on Sunday, October 19 at 11 a.m. The roundup is being hosted by Bowie State.
