PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Fayetteville State women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter tied 51-51 with Lincoln (PA), but could not take control and fell 65-62 to the Lions on the road Tuesday.
Lincoln (PA), now holding a record of 7-9 overall and 4-4 in the CIAA, saw standout performances from key players Anyssa Fields and Ciani Montgomery. Fields led the Lions with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and a steal, while Montgomery contributed 18 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
Keayna McLaughlin led the Broncos (8-6, 3-2) with 17 points, four assists, and three steals. Morgan Graham added eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocks, and KaNyah O'Neal helped out with six points and four steals off the bench. Taleah Stephens pulled down four offensive rebounds, pacing an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Fayetteville State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into six second-chance points.
The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 20 Lincoln (PA) turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. O'Neal's four steals led the way individually for the Broncos.
After jumping out to a 5-4 advantage, Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run with 6:56 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Stephens, to increase its lead to 10-4. The Broncos then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 15-14. Lincoln (PA) kept adding to that lead, building a 32-20 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Navaeh Colon, to narrow its deficit to 32-25. The Broncos continued to chip away, reducing the Lincoln (PA) lead to 39-33 heading into the break.
Lincoln (PA) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-41 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 10-0 run to tie things up at 51 with 1:18 to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Fayetteville State took advantage of five Lincoln (PA) turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways. Lincoln (PA) broke the tie, edging ahead in the game's final quarter and leaving Fayetteville State behind 65-62 at the final buzzer.
