The Fayetteville State Broncos lost to the Bowie State Bulldogs, 10-4, in the first game of the CIAA Softball Championship Tournament played on Friday in Glen Allen, Va.
The Broncos had a 4-2 lead going into the sixth inning but were unable to hold on. Kevana Deberry, a freshman who came out of the bullpen, took the loss for Fayetteville State, which now has an overall record of 14-19. At the plate, the Broncos were led by Olivia Jackson, a junior who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Claira Stone, a freshman, also had a good day, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Angelica Locklear, a sophomore, contributed one hit in three plate appearances, along with a walk and an RBI.
Fayetteville State scored four runs in the third inning, including a single by Jackson. However, Bowie State came back and scored eight times in the next four innings to win the game.
Jackson had three hits for the Broncos. Fayetteville State left 11 runners on base and out-hit the Bulldogs 10-7. The Broncos got three hits in six at-bats with the bases loaded. Fayetteville State pitchers allowed two ground balls and 12 fly balls while striking out six in the game.
Bowie State's offense was led by Coreena Dunham, a freshman who had a double and two RBI. Karen Fritzges, another freshman, pitched two scoreless innings for the Bulldogs.
Fayetteville State will face Shaw University in the next round of the Quarterfinals.
