GLEN ALLEN, VA --The Fayetteville State Broncos had an impressive win over Shaw, securing a 4-3 victory in extra innings on Sunday. Freshman Xztashya Porter hit a single to walk it off for the Broncos in the eighth inning, clinching the win against the Bears. Freshman Kevana Deberry was the winning pitcher for Fayetteville State, pitching eight innings and giving up three earned runs on five hits, striking out nine and allowing only one walk.
Sophomore Treja Patterson was the leading batter for the Broncos, going 4-for-4 with a double and a walk. Porter also put on an impressive performance, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Junior Morgan Jackson contributed with three hits in four trips to the plate. Fayetteville State took the lead in the fifth inning, but after Shaw tied the game at one, the Broncos regained the lead in the sixth inning. However, Shaw rallied in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Broncos then tied the game at three, pushing the game into extra innings.
The Broncos out-hit the Bears with 11-5, and their pitchers limited Shaw to only 1-for-5 (.200) with runners in scoring position. Patterson led the Broncos at the plate, recording four hits, while Deberry led the pitchers, striking out nine Bears hitters. Shaw's sophomore Virginia Ollison had a double and an RBI, leading the Bears offensively.
It was a thrilling game that ended with the Broncos taking home the win and extending their championship goals. They will play again tomorrow, May 4th at 1 pm.
