Track & Field Prepares for Fourth Indoor CIAA Championships

The Fayetteville State Women's Track & Field program is completing its final preparations for the upcoming CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two-day event, hosted by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, will be held from Sunday, February 11th through Monday the 12th at the JDL Fast Track facility in Winston-Salem, NC.

This year marks the 44th year the CIAA has sponsored indoor track & field as a women's sport and the 47th for the men.

The Broncos will be in a battle for a fourth straight title as the program has become the dominant team to watch. FSU is ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region as of February 5th by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCCCCA) with 178.64 points. Slippery Rock leads the poll and rival Winston-Salem State is just below Fayetteville State with 154.47 points. Saint Augustine's ranks eighth.

 Here is how the Broncos stack up for the Championship.

  • 60 Meters
    • Queen Burnett ranks fifth in the conference with a time of 7.80 seconds. Three competitors trail her with a matched time of 7.84. Brianna Benloss of Winston-Salem State leads the CIAA with an NCAA qualifying time of 7.56.
  • 200 Meters
    • Janya Moore has the fourth fastest time in the conference with a clock of 24.91 seconds. Hayleigh Bryant (Winston-Salem State) is the conference leader with a mark of 24.62. Moore is only a couple hundredths of a second behind the second and third-ranked runners. Asheika Smith (Saint Augustine's) is second with a time of 24.85 and Malaysia Johnson is third (24.87).
    • Jessica McQueen has the seventh fastest time of 25.24, which was performed on Jan. 19 in the Oceanfront Invitational. McQueen could easily be fifth and in front of Timaya Ray's (Johnson C. Smith) 25.04 and Kamani Johns' (Lincoln Pa.) 25.23.
    • Burnett is ranked tenth in the event from her performance on Jan. 26. Queen trails Ronee Tudor (WSSU; 25.27) and Brianna Benloss (WSSU; 25.29).
  • 400 Meters
    • Jessica McQueen has the fastest time in the Atlantic Region and ranks 49th in Division II with a time of 56.78.
    • Moore is in proximity of McQueen with the fourth fastest time in the CIAA (57.24). 
    • Lincoln's Kamani Johns ranks second (57.11) and WSSU's Bryant is third (57.11).
  • 800 Meters
    •  Fayetteville State is stacked in the 800 meters with four runners ranking in the top 10.
    • Repline Cheptoo and Viola Korir are second and third with almost identical times. Cheptoo's 2:21.35 is almost a second behind the leader Trinity Bumbry's (Livingstone) 2:20.75. Korir has a time of 2:21.93.
    • Nia Gibson ranks eighth in the CIAA with a time of 2:25.36 and Irene Jeptoo is tenth in line with a time of 2:26.08.
  • Mile
    • Fayetteville State is the strongest in the mile with five runners in the top six.
    • Irene Jeptoo has the sixth fastest mile in the Atlantic Region and the fastest 5:11.59 in the conference.
    • Nia Gibson is second (5:18.35) with Repline Cheptoo at third (5:29.13) and Joan Kiplagat at fourth (5:29.940).
    • Daisey Jerop ranks sixth with a time of 5:37.91. 
  • 3000 Meters
    • The Broncos have four runners in the top five. 
    • Again, Jeptoo leads the conference with a time of 10:32.41 and Gibson is second at 10:43.81. 
    • Jerop is fourth behind Virginia State's Manuelee Deigh by five seconds with 11:17.60.
    • Kiplagat is fifth in 11:18.49.
  • 60-meter Hurdles
    • FSU doesn't have a presence in the top ten.
    • Diamond Spencer ranks 12th with a time of 9.22 seconds.
  • 4x400m Relay
    • The Broncos are ranked second out of 11 teams with McQueen, Burnett, Moore, and Malaysia Barber passing the baton in 3:56.36. Saint Augustine's leads the event (3:55.91) while Lincoln (Pa.) is third (3:59.25).
  • Distance Medley Relay
    • FSU's 12:41.94 DMR is ranked no. 1 over the four teams that have run the event during the season.
  • High Jump
    • Domanique Knowles is ranked the best high jumper in the conference and fifth in the Region.
  • Long Jump
    • M'Smrya Seward jumped to the top of the Atlantic Region over the weekend with a leap of 6.11 meters (20' 0.5"). The three-time NCAA All-American is currently ranked fourth in the Division.
  • Triple Jump
    • Tiara Wilson is ranked the best triple jumper with a distance of 11.72m (38' 5.5"). She is fourth in the Atlantic Region and 44th in the division.
    • Knowles is ranked seventh with a mark of 11.24 meters (36' 10.5").
  • Shot Put
    • Da'Sia Smith is ranked eighth in the conference with a heave of 10.80m (35' 5.25").
