
Winston-Salem, NC – The Fayetteville State Track & Field program made an impression at the JDL Fast Track Mondo College Invitational following the holiday break with numerous top ten performances. Distance runner
Irene Jeptoo had the best performance of all after winning the mile run in 5:14.67.
The Winston-Salem (NC) meet was the first of the 2024 calendar year and second on the Broncos schedule. The JDL Fast Track facility will also be the host site of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Indoor Championship in mid-February.
The 4x400 relay squad of
Jessica McQueen,
Malaysia Barber,
Mia Thompson, and
Abraonna Williams finished second in 4:11.26. The "B" team (
Holley Johnson,
Tatiana Chigwerewe,
Anaya Holloman, and
Jayla Williams) finished sixth (4:22.63).
Queen Burnett ran 26.17 in section #1 of the seeded 200 meters to rank sixth overall. Barber ran 27.15 in section #4 and ranked tenth.
McQueen participated in the seeded quarter mile and finished third with a time of 58.12 seconds. In the open 400, Johnson ran 1:03.64 (6
th) and Chigwerewe 1:04.76 (10
th).
The Broncos dominated the 800 meters with four athletes finishing in the top-10.
Repline Cheptoo and
Viola Korir almost finished neck-and-neck as Cheptoo crossed for 2
nd place (2:28.16) and Korir for 3
rd (2:38.53).
Nia Gibson, who ran in the same section as Repline and Viola, was right behind her teammates and finished fourth overall with a time of 2:30.19.
Ashley Bell ran in section #3 and ranked seventh overall in 2:33.92.
Gibson also ran the 3,000 meters and crossed the finish line tenth with a time of 10:59.22.
Tanzania Washington qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a preliminary time of 9.45 in heat #3. She finished eighth in the finals with clock of 9.78.
The 4x800, which consisted of Korir, Cheptoo,
Joan Kiplagat, and Bell, finished fourth overall with a time of 10:06.87.
Domanique Knowles ranked ninth in the high jump event clearing 4-0.75 (1.47 meters).
Tiara Wilson,
Kaiya Wright, and
Mia Thompson went 5
th, 6
th, and 7
th in the triple jump with distances of 11.0m, 10.15m, and 10.04m, respectively.
Fayetteville State will return to action this weekend at the Blue Marlin Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Friday and Saturday.
