GAME 2 | Fayetteville State 8, Johnson C. Smith 1
FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to an 8-1 victory over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (4-13 overall, 3-5 CIAA) on Wednesday.
Freshman Jameyah Mars (5-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for Fayetteville State (11-15, 6-3 CIAA). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out three.
Freshman DeMya Brown led the way offensively for the Broncos, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and three RBI. Freshman Angelica Locklear provided a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Olivia Jackson also chipped in, going 1-for-1 for Fayetteville State with three walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Jackson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Fayetteville State and get them on the board.
After the Golden Bulls rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Broncos came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Fayetteville State plated two runs off of Johnson C. Smith pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Brown, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Broncos.
Fayetteville State held Johnson C. Smith scoreless before building their lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning. The Broncos bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run error off the bat of freshman Dakota Smith and a two-run single from Locklear.
Fayetteville State kept the Golden Bulls scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Broncos scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Brown, bringing the Fayetteville State advantage to 8-1. The score remained 8-1 for the rest of the game, as the Broncos coasted to the win.
