GAME 1 | Fayetteville State 9, Saint Andrews (NC) 2
FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Â Fayetteville State got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Broncos put nine runs on the board and knock off the Saint Andrews (NC) Knights 9-2 Monday in game #1 of the doubleheader.
Freshman Hannah Mills (1-0 as a pitcher) got the win for Fayetteville State (3-7 overall). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits.
Freshman Treja Patterson led the way offensively for the Broncos, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with two RBI. Freshman Dakota Smith furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-5 with two RBI. Sophomore Olivia Jackson also contributed, going 2-for-5 for Fayetteville State with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Fayetteville State got an RBI single from freshman Angelica Locklear, scoring senior Angel Johnson from second base.
The Knights then tied the ballgame at one before the Broncos came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Fayetteville State put together a three-run frame, culminating in a run-scoring single from senior Makyiah Mitchell, which brought the Broncos lead to 4-1.
Fayetteville State kept Saint Andrews (NC) without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Broncos bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Smith.
The Knights gained ground, closing the gap to 8-2 until Fayetteville State added some insurance in the sixth. Freshman Izzabella Hembree crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Broncos, bringing the score to 9-2 in favor of Fayetteville State. The score remained 9-2 for the rest of the game, as the Broncos coasted to the win.
