LAURINBURG, NC --An explosive offensive output was not enough for Fayetteville State on Tuesday. The Broncos put up five runs, but could not hold the Saint Andrews (NC) Knights at bay, and were defeated 10-5.
BreAnna Steele (0-1) got the ball to start for Fayetteville State (2-7) and took the loss.
At the plate, the Broncos were led by Dakota Smith, who went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Angelica Locklear put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. Treja Patterson also chipped in for Fayetteville State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Smith drove in two runs for Fayetteville State with a single, that scored Olivia Jackson and Makyiah Mitchell.
The Broncos lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 8-2. Morgan Jackson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Fayetteville State, which tightened the Knights lead to 8-3.
Saint Andrews (NC) expanded their lead to 10-3 before the Fayetteville State offense got back to work, reducing that lead to 10-4 in the sixth.
Fayetteville State held the Knights off the board before narrowing the gap further in the seventh. Locklear crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Broncos, bringing the score to 10-5 in favor of Saint Andrews (NC). The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
