FSU’s Anthony Bennett Receives First CIAA Athletic Director of the Year Honor

Baltimore, MD – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) presented Fayetteville State University's Anthony Bennett with the 2021-22 Athletic Director of Year award during the annual CIAA Spring Meeting Awards Ceremony in Baltimore on May 17, 2022. Since becoming a Director of Athletics in 2015, this is his first AD of the Year honor.

"I am very appreciative of this honor," Bennett said. "But this honor is for the hard work and dedication the entire athletics staff put forth this year. This award is for the coaches, student-athletes, and staff and I don't take them for granted."

Fayetteville State captured five out of the 11 sponsored CIAA Championships this year with two runner-up trophies.

The women's cross-country program won its fourth consecutive title in Salem, Virginia. Head Coach Inez Turner was named the women's coach of the year for the fourth time with five runners earning All-CIAA honors.

Turner coached her way to a second coach of the year honor after the Broncos won back-to-back indoor track & field titles. Jade Jordan captured the women's field MVP and Mya Johnson the track event's MVP.

After the final event of the 2022 Outdoor Championships, a first-place finish by the 4x400-meter relay squad gave the Broncos enough points to tie Winston-Salem State for a share of the CIAA crown. Turner was Co-Coach of the Year with WSSU's coach. Mya Johnson was named the CIAA Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and Shania Ingram the Field Athlete of the Year.

The volleyball program claimed its back-to-back title in 2021 with a sweep over Shaw. Six Broncos received post-season accolades with Da'Nesha Miller earning the Food Lion Tournament Most Valuable Player award for the second straight time.

Men's Basketball broke a 49-year hiatus from its first CIAA title in 1973 by outlasting Virginia Union 65-62 in Baltimore, MD. Three Broncos received post-season honors with Jalen Seegars being named the Tournament MVP.

The football program finished the season with the runner-up title in the CIAA Championship game and 12 All-Conference performers. Keyshawn James was named the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year and Championship Game Food Lion Runner-up MVP while Greg Brooks received the conference's Offensive Lineman of the Year and Lowe's CIAA Men's Senior CLASS Award.

The women's bowling program wrapped up the season as the runner-up at the championship tournament with four All-CIAA performers and two All-Tournament bowlers.

Fayetteville State University received its first Loretta Taylor All-Sports Award for women's sports during the awards ceremony. The award is determined by a point system established to award an institution for achievement in each program. The winner is the institution with the most combined total points for all sponsored sports based on their conference finish and the number of CIAA-sponsored events.

Since 2015, under the leadership of Anthony Bennett, Fayetteville State has won eleven conference championships.
