Fayetteville State University Announces 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame Inductees

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville State University (FSU) proudly announces the 2025 class of inductees into the FSU Athletics Hall of Fame, honoring individuals and teams whose exceptional contributions have shaped the legacy of Bronco Athletics. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on Friday, October 10, 2025 at the J.D. Fulton Recreation Center on 6627 Old Bunce Road, Fayetteville. 

Individual Inductees
John Michael Cole – Golf Coach

John Michael Cole has built an impressive career in collegiate golf, transitioning from a decorated student-athlete to a nationally recognized coach. As a player, he earned multiple honors including CIAA Player of the Year and PGA Works Division II Champion. He later competed professionally, winning the 2015 Crow Creek Invitational. Cole launched a successful program at Fayetteville Tech and at Fayetteville State, the Broncos captured the 2023 CIAA Championship, qualified for NCAA DII Nationals twice, produced multiple All-CIAA and All-Region players, and earned CIAA Coach of the Year (2019, 2023) and HBCU National Coach of the Year (2023).  At VCU, he helped the team reach a top-40 national ranking and win the A-10 title. He now serves as Head Coach at Georgia State University.


Kristen Hanzer – Women's Basketball
A dominant force for the Lady Broncos, Hanzer earned CIAA Player of the Year (2013), All-Atlantic Region honors, and Daktronics Honorable Mention All-America recognition. She ranked 2nd in CIAA scoring (18.7 ppg), 1st in steals (3.8), and 4th in assists (3.5) during her senior season. Hanzer scored in double figures 25 times, including a career-high 35 points against Catawba, cementing her legacy as one of FSU's all-time greats.

Robert "Bobby" Henderson – Bowling Coach
Henderson's impact spans decades as a recruiter, basketball coach, and the inaugural head coach of FSU's women's bowling program. He helped shape NCAA bowling rules as a member of the national committee and built FSU into a dynasty with six CIAA Championships, including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 and a three-peat in 2023, 2024, and 2025. His leadership and vision have made him one of the most respected coaches in collegiate bowling.

Martin Herring – Men's Track
Herring starred for FSU from 1971–1973, earning FSU Track Athlete of the Year (1971) and tying the NAIA Indoor 60-yard Hurdles Record (1972). After graduating with a degree in Political Science, he ran for Mayor of Greenevers, NC (1999) and the NC House of Representatives (2000, 2002). Herring later became an entrepreneur, producing a gospel CD for stress relief, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in film production.

Richard Medlin – Football
Medlin played two seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Atlanta Falcons after a stellar FSU career. Following football, he joined the U.S. Army, became an Airborne Paratrooper, and deployed to Kuwait and Syria with the Special Operations Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. He earned British Jump Wings during an international airborne operation and now works as a full-time fitness coach and instructor.

Ines Nieves – Women's Tennis

From 2005 to 2008, Nieves was a dominant force in CIAA tennis, earning multiple accolades throughout her collegiate career. She was named CIAA Rookie of the Year in 2005, followed by CIAA Player of the Year honors in both 2007 and 2008. In 2007, she also claimed the CIAA Tournament MVP title and was selected to the CIAA All-Conference team for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008. Her impressive performance included a 26-match singles winning streak and a 15-match doubles streak. Nieves concluded her final season with a 16-5 overall record and an undefeated 13-0 mark in CIAA play at the No. 1 singles position.


Team Inductees
1996 Volleyball Team
Finished 23-9 overall and 14-4 in CIAA play under Coach Elorine Hill. Led by Sonja Walker (306 kills, 233 blocks) and Reeshemah Parkinson (898 assists, 87 aces), the team dominated offensively and defensively, setting a foundation for future success.

2002 Tennis Team
Captured the inaugural CIAA Women's Tennis Championship and earned an NCAA Division II Regional berth. Standouts included Sheryl Adams and Dana Maynor (CIAA Singles Champions) and the doubles team of Rhoshawnnah Clark and Bradsheedah Elohim (CIAA Doubles Champions).

2007 Bowling Team
Won FSU's first CIAA Bowling Championship, launching a tradition of excellence under Coach Henderson. Their success paved the way for multiple future titles and established FSU as a bowling powerhouse.
