RALEIGH, NC --It was a tough day for Shaw pitchers, as the Fayetteville State Broncos tallied eight runs en route to an 8-5 victory over the Bears on Sunday.
Sophomore BreAnna Steele (0-4) got the win out of the bullpen for Fayetteville State (9-12, ). The right-hander went 3.1 shutout innings, giving up two hits, no walks and striking out four.
Junior M'Smrya Seward led the way offensively for the Broncos, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Senior Angel Johnson furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Kyra Mitchell also chipped in, going 2-for-3 for Fayetteville State with a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos were trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Fayetteville State's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Johnson.
The Broncos then held the Bears scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Senior Grace Vincent came across to score the lone run of the inning for Fayetteville State, which brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the Broncos.
Fayetteville State kept Shaw scoreless before expanding their lead to 8-5 the following inning. The Broncos added a run when Seward drew a walk from Syhia Marks that scored Mitchell. The score remained 8-5 for the rest of the game, as Fayetteville State held on for the win.
