RALEIGH, NC --The Fayetteville State Broncos broke through after a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning to knock off the Elizabeth City State Vikings 4-2 Saturday at the CIAA Softball Roundup in Raleigh, NC at the Walnut Creek Complex.
BreAnna Steele (3-7) got the win for Fayetteville State (8-12, 3-1). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.
Kyra Mitchell led the way offensively for the Broncos, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a double, a home run, a walk and an RBI. Angel Johnson put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brianna Crosby also helped out, going 1-for-3 for Fayetteville State with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Mikayla Jackson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Fayetteville State and get them on the board.
The Vikings failed to push any runs across before the Broncos built on their lead in the fourth inning. Fayetteville State picked up a run on Mitchell's leadoff home run off of C. Wright, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Broncos.
Elizabeth City State fired back to even the ballgame at two before Fayetteville State reclaimed a 4-2 advantage in the sixth inning. The Broncos scored twice, with one run coming across on Crosby's single. The score remained 4-2 for the rest of the game, as Fayetteville State held on for the win.
