Fayetteville, NC - The Broncos softball team (5-11 overall) split wins with the Monarchs of Methodist University (8-13 overall) in the non-conference doubleheader at the Price Softball Field.
The second game of the twin bill and win for the Broncos came down to a single scored run (6-5).
The Broncos posted two doubles by Grace Vincent and Angel Johnson (2 stolen bases, RBI, triple), Laniyah Bethea, Mikayla Jackson, and Kyra Mitchell added an RBI each, and Brianna Crosby collected 2 RBI against the hosting Monarchs.
During the fourth inning, the Broncos pulled ahead of Methodist from within the batter's box with clean hits starting with designated player Brianna Crosby who singled to center field. Crosby advances from Morgan Jackson's sacrifice bunt which put her in the position to run a score in as Angel Johnson tripled (+RBI) just inside the right-field line.
Laniyah Bethea posted an RBI with Johnson tagging home for the Broncos following an error from the Monarchs' pitcher advancing Bethea safely to second base.Â
Â
Mikayla Jackson cleans a single to right field, another bad toss from the Monarchs' defense makes way for her to push to second base and bring Bethea over home plate.Â
Â
Pitcher Kyra Mitchell sent a hit up the middle to center field for a single and safe return for Vincent.
Johnson adds another single to kickstart the offense in the top of the sixth inning. Despite a quick double play after Bethea popped a bunt infield and the defense caught Johnson in transition, the Broncos managed to add two points to finish over the Monarchs.Â
Â
Jackson follows with a single to shortstop and then advances from a wild toss. Grace Vincent cracks a double to a center field which opens Jackson a lane to tag home. Finally, Mitchell's single to center field and RBI seals the deal for the Broncos to win.Â
Thursday, March 24th the softball team will travel to Raleigh, NC to compete in the CIAA Softball Roundup. Their first matchup begins at 10:00 a.m. against Virginia State University.Â
