Fayetteville State Prepares for Ninth NCAA Golf Regional Tournament

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University Golf program was selected as one of 64 teams and 24 student-athletes competing as individuals that have been announced to participate in the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships.

The Broncos, who ranked sixth in the Atlantic Region, received an at-large bid to the Atlantic/East Region Golf Tournament at the Lakeview Country Club in North East, Pennsylvania.  The event, hosted by Mercyhurst University will be held May 6-8.

Fayetteville State is no stranger to Regional Championships. The Broncos have participated in eight NCAA DII Super Regionals and have finished as high as third in 2007 and second in 2009. FSU advanced to the 2009 National Championships and finished 17th overall.

Head Coach John Cole
"To be able to qualify for regionals during this pandemic year meant everything to this team", said Head Golf Coach John Cole. "It's a step in the right direction for this program that we were probably going to take last year but didn't get the opportunity."

Fayetteville State finished second at the 2019 CIAA Championships in Coach Cole's first year at the helm and was a month away from competing in the CIAA 2000 Championships. The conference opted out of sponsoring this Spring's Championships but allowed teams to compete on their own.

"To be able to do it this year without a conference championship and to simply be one of the best teams in the region and earn that spot by playing some of the best teams in the area gave us the gratification of knowing we belong there."

"It's a major impact [to participate this season] because as a program, we don't want to stay stagnant. We are not here to be average.  We are here to be the best every time we tee it up."

The golf program at Fayetteville State University is the most successful program on campus with 26 conference titles. John Cole began his collegiate golf career at FSU in 2011 and was one of 32 individual players to participate in the NCAA DII Atlantic/East Regional Championships. He narrowly missed qualifying for a spot in the Division-II National Championships.

"Golf [at Fayetteville State] has always been a winning program and we want to get back to it.  To have once played in this event and now to coach there, means a lot to me. I missed making the National Championship so to have a chance to give five guys the opportunity to do something I never got to do is pretty special."

The top four teams as well as the top individual not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Championships at the PGA National Resort Championship Course in Palm Beach Garden, Florida.
