April 26, 2017 Fayetteville, NC-- The Fayetteville State University Department of Athletics commemorated the 2016-17 athletic and academic year with the annual Bronco Sports Awards (BSA) ceremony held Wednesday, April 19th at the J.W. Seabrook Auditorium. Team award recipients and over 150 student-athletes were recognized for academic excellence across all 10 varsity sports and cheerleading at the awards ceremony.
Redshirt freshman running back Stevie Green (Washington, NC) and freshman bowler Brittany Worthy (Durham, NC) received the top awards as the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
Green recorded 1,150 rushing yards, six TDs, and 115 yards per game in 10 games played this season. He earned CIAA Offensive Rookie of the Year and All-CIAA Second Team honors. Green rushed for the second most yards in a single season at Fayetteville State.
Green also received All-CIAA Second Team honors and had the second most rushing yards in a season at Fayetteville State. He was named CIAA Rookie of the Week twice times and Offensive Back of the Week once.
In addition to an All-CIAA First Team selection, Worthy won Rookie Bowler of the Year due to her performance throughout the season. She ranked third overall in the conference with a total of 6,284 pins and a 190.42 average. She bowled a total of 33 games during the regular season. Worthy received CIAA Rookie Bowler of the Month honors on two occasions this year.
Fayetteville State University has also been welcomed into the fold as the 10th college or university in the State of North Carolina and earned the designation of North Carolina Kappa chapter for the National College Athlete Honor Society -- Chi Alpha Sigma (XAâˆ'). During the BSA ceremony, FSU had six inductees who met the criteria of 3.4 GPA or higher in their junior year of eligibility. The 2017 Fayetteville State Chi Alpha Sigma inductees were: Kortni Adams {Softball}; Devondra Bazemore {Bowling}; Ashlee Gaskins {Cheerleading}; Brittany Lee {Softball}; Lola Neal {Bowling}; and Austen Parlett {Golf}.
The society's motto is "Excellence in Academics and Athletics." Its watchwords are "Athletics, Academics Achievement, and Attitude." The mission of the NCAHS is to bring honor and recognition to deserving student-athletes, their families, teams, athletic departments and colleges in much the same way as Phi Beta Kappa honors scholastics.
Members of the FSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) served as the masters of ceremonies.
