PETERSBURG, VA - The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos tennis team is on a tear.
Varice Love (Fr., Fayetteville, NC) and Brittney Williams (Fr., Greensboro, NC) each won all three of their singles matches and their three doubles matches together to lead the Lady Broncos to three straight victories at the CIAA Roundup over the weekend.
The Lady Broncos fell 8-1 to Virginia State on Saturday, but quickly put that match in the past on their way to a dominant 9-0 victory over Lincoln (PA), a 5-4 win over Bowie State and a 5-4 win over Virginia Union.
And Love and Williams were big reasons why. Love, Fayetteville State's top-seeded player, and Williams, the Lady Broncos' No. 2, picked up convincing singles victories in two of the matches, and then did the same when they teamed together as a doubles team. The duo of Love and Williams were never threatened in each of the three victories, winning by scores of 8-0, 8-3 and 8-3.
But the Lady Broncos' dazzling duo couldn't win the matches by themselves. Chioma Okwara (Fr., Charlotte, NC), Tiane Ellis (So., Fayetteville, NC), Danielle Boone (So., Hallsboro, NC) and Jo'Nel Barnes each won singles matches against Lincoln, with the duos of Ellis and Okwara winning by the score of 8-5 and Boone and Barnes cruising to an 8-0 win.
Against Bowie State, the Lady Broncos (3-6, 3-1) swept the doubles portion of the event to clip the Lady Bulldogs. Joining Love and Williams were the teams of Okwara and Ellis and Boone and Barnes, who won by the scores of 8-2 and 8-6, respectively, to give Fayetteville State the win.
And against Virginia Union, the Lady Broncos got a key singles win from No. 3 seed Okwara as wins by the teams of Love and Williams and Boone and Barnes closed out the Lady Panthers with wins in two of the three doubles matches.
The Lady Broncos will play the second half of the roundup on Saturday in Raleigh, facing off against Elizabeth City State, Chowan and St. Paul's.
