FAYETTEVILLE - Friends and Family Day proved to be a success for Fayetteville State on Saturday.

In front of their largest crowd of the season, the Broncos topped St. Augustine's 5-4 to win in CIAA play for the third time this year.

"I'm glad that we had a really good turnout today," said FSU (3-10, 2-8 CIAA) head coach Arie Bennett. "That was my main goal, to just get some support out for the girls. It feels great to get a win."

Freshman Shantana Donegan (Brooklyn, NY), FSU's No. 1 singles player, topped Brittany Shim 8-6 and Amber Mitchell (Red Springs, NC), playing No. 2 singles, bested Kira Edgehill 8-1.

The Falcons' Martinne Deronette beat FSU's Kristy Mitchell (Fayetteville, NC) 8-1 while FSU's Danielle Boone (Hallsboro, NC) and Tiane Ellis (Fayetteville, NC) won their matches 8-3.

The team of Schanelle Ebanks (Irvington, NJ) and Boone got the Broncos' only doubles victory via an 8-3 win. Shim and Edgehill beat FSU's Donegan and Kristy Mitchell 8-5 and Martinna and Martinne Deronette downed Ellis and Amber Mitchell 8-6.

Bennett said she was impressed with her team's play.

"Shantana (Donegan) did really good," said Bennett. "She just had some minor mistakes. Also, Amber (Mitchell) losing doubles and coming back to win singles was really good."

"I just told her to get revenge and she came back and did that. Tiane (Ellis) really did step up today during singles. She moved her feet a lot better, getting around and hitting balls like she's supposed to."
