Petersburg, VA - The Lady Broncos tennis team finished in second place in the women's number one, two and three doubles position at the CIAA Tennis Championships on Wednesday afternoon from the tennis complex at Virginia State University.
Sophomore Ines Nieves and senior LeJacquelyn Artis entered the tournament as the third seed at the number one doubles position. In the opening round, Nieves and Artis defeated the sixth seed Kyara Lombre and Angelica Barrett of Bowie State University 8-2. In the following round, the duo took down the second seed of Imani James and Donna Johnson from the hosting Virginia State University 8-4 to advance to the championship match.
In the finals, Nieves and Artis fell short of bringing home the championship by losing to Livia Oliveira and Juanique Thompson of Shaw University 8-2.
Unfortunately, there was a case of déjà vu at the number two and number three doubles positions for Fayetteville State University. Senior Constance Lee and sophomore Tyima Johnson advanced to the championship match against Asya Monds and Kendra Plummer of Virginia State University. The finals would feature the second seed (FSU) and the first seed (VSU). The tandem would come close but lose to Monds and Plummer 8-4.
The story was exactly the same for freshman Samantha Meeks and sophomore Chekimbrell Jefferson at the number three position. Meeks and Jefferson would face Tamilia Hicks and Keisha Holmes of Virginia State University in the championship match; but come up short with a loss of 8-0.
Singles competition will begin on Thursday morning from the tennis complex at Virginia State University. The complete results are listed below:
