FSU Football Shines with Four Players Named to CIAA Week 3 Honor Roll

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Following a commanding performance in Fayetteville State's 51-8 road victory over Elizabeth City State for the Down East Classic, four Broncos have been named CIAA Football Players of the Week for Week 3, highlighting excellence across all phases of the game.

John Hernandez-Vargas – Special Teams Player of the Week

Redshirt sophomore kicker John Hernandez-Vargas, a Business Administration major from Biscoe, N.C., was a key contributor in the win, going 3-for-4 on field goals, including makes from 35, 49, and 32 yards. He also went 6-for-6 on PATs, accounting for 15 total points. On kickoffs, Hernandez-Vargas averaged 45.0 yards over 10 attempts, with 3 touchbacks, consistently flipping field position and limiting return opportunities.

Matthew Leach – Linebacker of the Week

Junior linebacker Matthew Leach, a Sports Fitness and Management major from Raeford, N.C., led the Broncos with 7 total tackles (4 solo, 3 assisted), including 3.0 tackles for loss for 11 yards. His aggressive pursuit and gap control were instrumental in a defensive effort that held Elizabeth City State to just 89 total yards of offense. This marks Leach's second CIAA weekly honor of the season, further solidifying his role as a defensive leader for the Broncos.

Benjamin Hicks – Offensive Lineman of the Week

Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Benjamin Hicks, a Business Administration major from Mooresville, N.C.,  anchored a dominant Fayetteville State front line that paved the way for 454 total yards of offense in the Broncos' win over Elizabeth City State. The unit protected quarterback Demari Daniels for 255 passing yards and 3 touchdowns, and opened lanes for 151 rushing yards, including a rushing score. Under Hicks' leadership, the offense was 7-of-8 in red zone conversions, showcasing both efficiency and physicality.

Xayden Watson – Receiver of the Week

Freshman wide receiver Xayden Watson, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., made a statement in his first collegiate game, catching 7 passes for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns. He showcased his big-play ability with a 42-yard reception, and delivered one of the game's most memorable moments with a spectacular catch between two defenders while falling backward.

The Broncos return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 for their home opener at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium against Virginia State University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM, and the game will serve as Military Appreciation Day, honoring service members throughout the region.
