Broncos' Men's Basketball Travels to UNC Pembroke for Midweek Matchup

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Fayetteville State men's basketball will hit the road Wednesday night for a non-conference showdown against UNC Pembroke. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside the English E. Jones Center in Pembroke, N.C., as the Broncos look to build momentum early in the 2025-26 season.

Fayetteville State enters the contest at 1-1, averaging 87.5 points per game through its first two outings. The Broncos are shooting 43% from the field and 79.5% from the free-throw line, while showing defensive toughness with 7.5 blocks per game and 9.5 steals per contest. Despite the strong start offensively, FSU will look to improve its rebounding margin after being out-rebounded by opponents (37.5 RPG vs. 44.5 RPG).

Leading the way for the Broncos is Larry Howell, who has been dominant with 26.5 points per game and an impressive 87.5% free-throw percentage. Ezekiel Cannedy adds 21.5 points per game, including four three-pointers, while Romeo Aquino contributes 12.5 points and 9 rebounds per game. Travon Cooper II and Darius Boben provide additional scoring depth and defensive presence.

UNC Pembroke (0-2 overall) enters the matchup looking to bounce back after opening its season against USC Aiken and Lander. The Braves feature a balanced roster and will rely on their home-court advantage at the English E. Jones Center. UNCP's athleticism and ability to push the tempo will test Fayetteville State's defense in transition.

Last season, Fayetteville State earned a thrilling 76-75 victory over UNC Pembroke, snapping a 14-year drought in the series. Javon Floyd's clutch basket sealed the win, and the Broncos will look to replicate that success on Wednesday night.

Keys to the Game

  • Control the Glass: FSU must limit UNCP's second-chance opportunities and improve its rebounding margin.
  • Defend the Perimeter: The Braves are dangerous from deep; closing out on shooters is critical.
  • Tempo Management: Slowing UNCP's transition game will favor the Broncos.
  • Free Throws: FSU's 79.5% accuracy at the line could be decisive in a close contest.
  • Turnovers: Protecting the ball against pressure defense will be key for both teams.
