Fayetteville State squares off with Claflin for the first time this season and in the first match with the Panthers since 10/31/2024. FSU swept Claflin in three sets during both matchups last season and has not dropped a single set to Claflin since the 2022 season. The Broncos have also won 14 straight matches over the Panthers with Claflin's last win coming on 11/9/2016.Â
Week 5 CIAA Honors: The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) named Fayetteville State volleyball players, Chiara Vittoni and Jasmine Culp, as the week #5 CIAA Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Vittoni delivered a standout week of performances that helped the Broncos secure four straight wins. Over the course of matches against Livingstone, Bowie State, Lincoln (PA), and Virginia Union, Vittoni's game-high performance came against Bowie State, where she recorded 15 kills, contributing 18.0 total points. Across the week, she totaled 42 kills, 14 digs, and 48.0 points.
Culp anchored Fayetteville State's back row with a standout performance against Livingstone, where she recorded a season-high 26 digs. Over the week, she totaled 56 digs and 9 service aces.
A Roundup Sweep: The Broncos held down home court as the hosts of the CIAA roundup this past weekend, winning all nine sets in match sweeps of Bowie State, Lincoln and Virginia Union. The Broncos have now won four straight conference matches and won 13 of the last 14 sets played since dropping the CIAA opener to Winston-Salem State.Â
League Leaders: FSU is currently leading the CIAA in points per set (15.3) and kills per set (11.9) while also ranking second in assists per set (10.3) and fourth in blocks per set (1.7)
Teamwork Teixeira: First-year Bronco Giovanna Teixeira is leading the CIAA with 7.4 assists per set. Her 290 total assists also rank third in the conference behind Ashlee Franklin of Virginia Union and Gabby Hale of Bluefield State. Teixeira moved to the United States from Brazil in 2023 and transferred to FSU this season from Columbia University.Â
Efficient Amihan: Broncos middle blocker Amihan Johnson is currently leading the CIAA in hitting percentage with 69 total kills in 137 attacks, good for a 40.1% mark. Johnson is the only player in the conference above a 40% hitting percentage and most recently converted 16 of 32 total attacks during the CIAA roundup.Â
Up Next: Following today's match against Claflin, the Broncos will return home to Capel Arena and host the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls on October 13th at 6:00 PM. The following weekend FSU will be in Bowie, Maryland for another CIAA Roundup where they are scheduled to play Virginia State, Bluefield State and Elizabeth City State.
