
The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) announces the 8-team field for its 2024 Softball Championship. Fayetteville State will enter the tournament as the southern division's no. 2 seed and will take on the no. 3 of the North, Bowie State University.
The double elimination tournament featuring the top four teams in the south and the top four teams in the north, based on division winning percentage, will begin Friday, May 3 with quarterfinal action beginning at 10am. Advancing teams will head to the semifinal and championship rounds on Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5. All games will be hosted at RF&P Park in Glen Allen, VA.
Fayetteville State finished the regular season with a 7-3 (.700) divisional standing and an 8-8 (.500) record. The Broncos are 14-18 overall. FSU defeated Bowie State earlier this season on March 27
th, 6-4 in seven innings.
Treja Patterson went 3-for-4, hitting two doubles, a home run, and an RBI.
Xztashya Porter also had an excellent day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.
Hannah Mills pitched seven innings, allowing four earned runs and nine hits, while striking out five and walking two. The Broncos led 6-1 through six innings and survived a three-run rally by the Bulldogs in the seventh.
The no. 1 seed in the north goes to Virginia State who earned a 9-1 divisional record and a 15-1 conference record. The Trojans are coming off two big wins against Virginia Union and will look to rally as they continue the hunt for their first CIAA Softball Championship title since 2004. They will face the no. 4 seed in the south, Shaw University at 10am on Friday.
The no. 1 seed in the south goes to the Rams of Winston-Salem State University, who boast a perfect 10-0 divisional record and a 12-4 conference record. As the only team without a blemish in divisional play, the Rams will look to claim their 7th CIAA Softball Championship (fastpitch) this weekend. They meet the no. 4 seed in the north, Virginia Union, at 12pm on Friday.
