Joe Owens, Jr. and
John Hernandez-Vargas, as Week #9 Players of the Week.
Joe Owens, Jr., a graduate quarterback from Greenville, SC, was named Quarterback of the Week for the second time this season. Owens showcased his exceptional talent and leadership in Fayetteville State's commanding 27-0 victory over undefeated Johnson C. Smith. Owens demonstrated remarkable accuracy and efficiency, completing 24 of 32 passes for a 75% completion rate and throwing for 233 yards, including a long pass of 49 yards and a touchdown. His versatility was further highlighted by his contributions on the ground, where he carried the ball 9 times for 45 yards, including a 32-yard run and a rushing touchdown. Owens' dual-threat capability was instrumental in the Broncos' success.
John Hernandez-Vargas, a sophomore kicker from Biscoe, NC, was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week for a third time. Hernandez-Vargas delivered an exceptional performance on special teams in Fayetteville State's 27-0 victory over Johnson C. Smith. His contributions were pivotal, particularly in the kickoff department, where he executed 5 kickoffs for a total of 285 yards, consistently placing the ball deep and preventing any significant returns. Hernandez-Vargas also excelled in point-after attempts, successfully converting 3 out of 4.
The Broncos will travel to Winston-Salem, NC to play Winston-Salem State on Saturday, November 9th at 1:00 pm.
