ELIZABETH CITY, NC --It was a difficult day for Shaw pitchers, as the Fayetteville State Broncos put up eight runs en route to an 8-6 victory over the Bears on Saturday.
Freshman Hannah Mills (2-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Fayetteville State (8-14, 2-2 CIAA). The right-hander went 5.1 shutout innings while giving up two hits, allowing one walk and striking out one.
Sophomore Morgan Jackson led the way offensively for the Broncos, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double. Sophomore Laniyah Bethea provided a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Freshman Treja Patterson also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Fayetteville State with two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos were trailing 6-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Jackson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Fayetteville State and get them on the board.
The Broncos kept the deficit at 6-1 before closing the gap further in the fourth. The Fayetteville State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a one-run sac off the bat of sophomore Olivia Jackson, which tightened the Bears lead to 6-5.
Fayetteville State kept the Bears off the board before rallying to grab an 8-6 lead in the fifth. The Broncos put up a three spot, highlighted by a run-scoring double from sophomore Morgan Jackson. The score remained 8-6 for the rest of the game, as Fayetteville State held on for the win.
