ELIZABETH CITY, NC --Freshman Angelica Locklear racked up four RBIs to help propel the Fayetteville State Broncos past the Elizabeth City State Vikings 13-11 on Friday during the CIAA Softball Roundup in Elizabeth City, NC.
Freshman Jameyah Mars (2-2) started in the circle and picked up the win for Fayetteville State (6-14, 1-2 CIAA). The right-hander went 2.1 innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing one walk and striking out one.
Locklear went 2-for-4 with a home run in addition to her four RBIs for the Broncos. Freshman DeMya Brown furnished a standout performance as well, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Senior Braynka Brown also contributed for Fayetteville State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
Elizabeth City State drops to 1-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos were trailing 2-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Fayetteville State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run walk off the bat of freshman Treja Patterson.
The Vikings then rallied to score nine runs and take an 11-4 lead before the Broncos got back on the board in the fourth. Fayetteville State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run homer from freshman DeMya Brown, which brought the score to 11-7 in favor of the Vikings.
Fayetteville State held the Vikings off the board before rallying to grab a 12-11 lead in the fifth. The Broncos bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Locklear.
Fayetteville State held the Vikings scoreless before their offense got back in action the next inning. Freshman DeMya Brown crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Broncos, bringing the Fayetteville State advantage to 13-11. The score remained 13-11 for the rest of the game, as the Broncos held on for the win.
